Electronic models are also highly accurate and are easy to read. The digital screen on these thermometers offers large, well-lit numbers indicating the temperature reading. Electronic models are also quick and easy to clean. Many thermometers offer disposable tips for much-needed sanitation.

These thermometers are widely-used in medical practices because of they offer faster results, are easy to use and easy to clean—individuals of all experience levels can easily learn how to use and maintain them. Electronic models are also a favorite with parents; getting children to sit still to obtain an accurate reading with a standard glass thermometer is often difficult. The electronic model, therefore, is a necessary item for all household first-aid kits. Pet owners are aware of the benefits of these thermometers as well; the quick temperature reading and the disposable tips make them a valued item when a pet is sick.

Electronic models measure a change in resistance. Resistance increases as the temperature goes up; the computer or other device inside the thermometer measures this resistance and then converts it into a temperature reading on its electronic screen. Standard glass thermometers use mercury, and it often takes minutes for the mercury to measure temperature. Electronic versions can measure resistance almost instantly, which is why they are much faster.
