Nursing Scrubs

National Scrubs

Scrubs were originally worn by surgeons, nurses, and other surgery room personnel, but were not generally worn by the rest of the hospital staff. Scrubs were easy to clean and good for sterile, cleanroom environments. Even the word scrubs refers to the act of scrubbing up for surgery. Nursing uniforms originally consisted of a cap pinned to the hair, a dress, and an apron. As hospital personnel began to change, and hospital procedures began to evolve, it made less and less sense to keep nurses in dresses and to keep scrubs confined in surgery rooms.

Nursing uniform scrubs are a response to the changing needs in a hospital environment. First, nursing uniform scrubs can be unisex. This is important in a hospital with a mix of male and female nurses, especially if the nursing uniform scrubs are meant to outfit an entire team or department of nurses. Second, nursing uniform scrubs are cost effective and easy to launder. If nursing uniform scrubs were not affordable and easily cleaned, they wouldn’t be a good fit for busy nurses. Nursing uniform scrubs also come in a variety of sizes, colors, and styles. Nursing uniform scrubs can be personalized to reflect a nurse’s personality, office, or patients.
