Unisex medical scrubs are the standard uniform of many hospitals and most surgical rooms. They are durable and comfortable and easy to launder. Hospitals prefer them not only as a uniform, but as protection from disease. Many hospitals also color-code their unisex medical scrubs to distinguish between visitors and members of different departments. The bottoms of unisex medical scrubs are made with drawstring waistbands simply because they can accommodate a wide range of waist sizes. This cuts down on the number of sizes that a hospital will need to keep in stock. Unisex medical scrubs bottoms can be reversible too, and they can also feature cargo pockets.

Unisex medical scrubs can come in a variety of colors and patterns, although companies and hospitals usually only use two or three colors and avoid printed patterns. Many hospitals choose to have their unisex medical scrubs monogrammed in order to display a company logo or a department.
